There are different levels of intelligence. My pets can read what is going on and communicate with me, for example, but they can't do math. Jobs where people are working with animals, plants, nature require a different level of intelligence than working with a computer. No one is in a pitiful situation; the right circumstances will have everyone survive and live well.
